A Frocking Good Read

I did a charity shop run yesterday and only brought a couple of things as nothing much caught my eye apart from this Baby Ceylon lacy crepe frock which looks great on, so I brought it for £4...

..and an 'Empire Youth Annual 1946' for £2. What I like about this book are the photographs showing not just the Forces, but everyone involved in the war effort including the A.R.P., Women's Land Army, munitions workers and the Red Cross; as such its a lovely piece of documentary history. The stories in it are ripping patriotic reads with titles such as In the Maquis, Monarch of the Hills and They Lead the Forces of Freedom.

Look at their elegant hairstyles!
I also picked up my first ever copy of Vintage Life magazine from W.H. Smiths and will definately take out a subscription. Its a great read and fills a hole in the market that has been otherwise overlooked, with the exception of some of the content of BBC Homes & Antiques magazine. I couldn't wait to get home and read it, so after brewing up a pot of Assam and fortiying myself with some Tunnocks Teacakes I settled down on the sofa for a couple of hours of quality vintage reading.

  5. Foof, VTT & Vix - you can buy a subscription online and have copies sent to your home; this is what I'll do I think (click onto the link in my post).

Thanks Julie, as soon as I saw the dress and found that it fitted, it had to come home with me!

  10. Love the dress. I'm looking forward to seeing what the 'proper' version of Vintage Life is like. I bought the last issue which was only available through mail order, and was a bit unsure. Lovely pictures and obviousy subject matter, but whereas Homes & Antiques is really well written, somehow I didn't feel Vintage Life quite gelled. Perhaps they had a lot of people writing who specialised in vintage, but who weren't professional writers. I think that can be fine in a blog (although I'm still occasionally put off by a badly written one) but a magazine needs a coherent style. Anyway, I really want to like it, so will definitely buy the inaugral WHSmith issue!

  11. I was delighted to read that you too have a liking for Assam tea!
My Tea Caddy is never filled with anything else, it is to me, the finest of teas.

That Empire Youth Annual looks in excellent condition.

  13. I have been a digital subscriber for since VLM launch last year. I am so pleased that this is now in the shops. I am considering switching to the paper version - although digital is cheaper. I like the idea of a brew and a tea cake in a steamed up cafe...

Do not let that annual within 10 miles of me or you will loose it!!

  14. Eeek, slightly shocked to see my ridiculous face (on your blog roll)looking at me when I arrived on your latest post! Anyway, I digress, sorry. Beautiful dress. Am very excited about VLM, will definitely check it out. Tunnock teacakes, btw, are my latest obsession!
